BREAKING NEWS EXCLUSIVELY FROM lsuodyssey.com:
Defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo, one of the best overall Tigers of 2022, finished the season strong as ever, picking up a sack vs Purdue on his way to being named as the only Tiger All-American....what fans didn't know???
After suffering a shoulder injury, Mekhi was powering through the pain during LSU's final few games of the season; Now that the season is over, Wingo immediately went under the knife for a surgical operation to repair his injured labrum.
The timetable for his recovery is 6 months, with Mekhi set to miss both Spring practices & the Spring Game itself.
A source close to the situation told us, "they want to ensure a full recovery. Pretty much the entire season he was injured but it progressively got worse. He felt committed to the team..."
Wingo told LSUOdyssey he's been doing plenty of rehab to get back fully fit for summer conditioning, though wanted LSU fans to know: "I been straight...just been chilling, man, tryna get better."
According to that additional source, LSUOdyssey were told, "The surgeon says he’s ahead of schedule" on his recovery.
As part of an exciting interior defensive line future, based around the returning Maason Smith, Mekhi's incredibly authoritative 2022 outing, and Jacobian Guillory's repeated growth, it is not a stretch to suggest the success or failure of LSU's 2023 defensive line depends on the performances of those three pillar linemen.....and their health is priority number one.
