-Son of 90s LSU starting QB Jamie Howard
You can't get much better than signing the #1 ranked QB of the class....especially when they're from Lafayette, born & raised a Tiger fan by their father...but what if their father also happened to be a former starting QB at LSU???
Perfect right?
Once in a generation symmetry?
No, more like once in a lifetime alchemy.
But it can get even better....a lot better:
This is a moment many Tigers waited a long time for, myself included.
I've spent a good portion of the past few years writing about LSU freshman QB Walker Howard as a St Thomas More Cougar. Now that the expected happened on December 15th 2021 when Walker signed on as an LSU Tiger, I'm elated to write my first feature on Howard in purple and gold.....and he's beyond worthy of every word, every play and every single moment:
One of the sharpest high school quarterback prospects of the past 25 years, possessing all the physical tools, mental attributes and emotional character needed to become a top 5 all time LSU slinger, Howard could feasibly start as a freshman if deemed ready or necessary by Brian Kelly.
Do I believe he's ready to start?
Yes I do. Unequivocally.
The question is:
Will Brian Kelly start a freshman phenom to begin his debut season coaching within the SEC's fiery cauldron???
I don't know the answer to that question just yet...but I believe spring practice will illuminate LSU's Quarterback situation, revealing exactly how these three quarterbacks settle into roles for the team.
I had a source tell me all along LSU would love to sign one more additional quarterback, in fact they're currently looking into transfer Jaden Daniels, however....Walker, Myles and Garrett are all LSU really need.
When looking ahead on the depth chart and seeing Garrett Nussmeier heading into his second season, wondering if this is his "make or break" year & super senior Myles Brennan, who's already entered the portal once before, is taking a major chance returning for one final run, how far can Kelly push their competitive buttons before one walks out the door with a 4th transfer arm also in tow?
LSU are enjoying the right kind of depth at quarterback right now: the freshman phenom prodigy, a stunning sophomore with game time underneath his feet, a wily veteran who's experienced everything a college football quarterback possibly could and then some....
But on paper or film, when looking at which quarterback holds the greatest skill set, strongest intangibles, and best playmaking ability, LSU's freshman wins the contest for me.
Don't sleep on Walker starting as a freshman......he's just that good.
