In a shocking move, LSU DL Maason Smith declared for the NFL Draft on Tuesday afternoon.
Why is it shocking?
It isn't, because of course, Maason has thrown God given athletic ability that elicits high draft picks & curries major favor from NFL franchises.
But after a listless, disappointing season coming off of his Week 1 ACL tear in 2022, it's odd to see Maason, a player with so much left to prove and accomplish, let alone so much more room to develop, ride off into the sunset after what amounts to two seasons curtailed by injury, one that shouldn't even count as a season (2022), and a third that began with an NCAA suspension and injury.
I hope Maason succeeds at the highest levels he's proven he can perform at, but I'm worried about his longevity and development at the next level.
Maason appeared in just 20 games for LSU, missing another 20 appearances at the same time (944 overall snaps), producing 47 tackles, 39 pressures, 9.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks (2.5 in 2023), and 2 pass breakups throughout his LSU career.

I think it is a mistake. Only Maason knows his body. Perhaps he feels he has turned a major corner, but he has not shown that. Good luck to a Tiger that was never able to realize his full potential at LSU.
