Longtime LSU running back John Emery Jr announced to LSUOdyssey and posted on his social media intentions to return for a last season of eligibility, an announcement that included a premade photo edit, though with the cryptic words "return to college football".
Emery Jr suffered consecutive lost 2023 & 2024 seasons due to an ACL tear, both season ending occurring after brilliant NFL level displays on the field....remaining effective even in limited snaps.
After a strong opening outing vs USC, rising from the sidelines to generate some life into an anonymous LSU running game. Emery Jr accounted for 71 total yards from 11 touches....all in the 3rd quarter.
John was also a major dual threat weapon before injuries for LSU's 2022 offense, accounting for 8 total TDs & just over 500 total yards from scrimmage (only 89 touches, at a clip of 5.6 per involvement). His big plays, moments, and touchdowns arrived in big games at crucial moments in wins vs Alabama, Florida & Auburn, while he scored 3 TDs during a loss to Texas A&M.
His 2021 season was lost due to academic ineligibility, a controversial ruling made by the NCAA right on the heels of LSU's opening week showdown vs UCLA.
As a freshman, Emery Jr scored 4 touchdowns as part of the 2019 National Championship squad, scoring a rushing touchdown against Oklahoma in the historic 2019 CFP Semifinal.
Overall, Emery Jr has appeared in 38 games for LSU thus far (10 in 2019 alone), rushed for 1,123 yards from 223 attempts, 5.0 yards per carry, 14 rushing TDs, 330 receiving yards, 37 catches, 8.9 per catch, and 2 receiving scores.
